Meet Nessa, The Leader Of Your Gut Reset Program
Hello! I’m Nessa. I’m a Registered Dietitian (RD) and Functional Medicine Practitioner at Root Cause Medical Clinic. I began my career in nutrition as a clinical dietitian working in the hospital setting. It was during this time that I saw the shortcomings in the traditional healthcare system. I was frustrated to see patients not get the answers they deserved, and at the time, also felt like I had limited tools and knowledge to help guide them to getting those answers. This led me to pursue training in functional medicine. Little did I know however, that this training would not only allow me to help my patients get to the root of their symptoms, but also my own….
My journey began with anxiety. I started having horrible anxiety in elementary school after changing schools. Shortly after developing anxiety, I began to develop periodic stomach pains and chronic bloating and gas. This went on for many years and it started to become my “normal”. Many members of my family also suffered with similar digestive issues and I just grew up thinking that these symptoms were something I was going to deal with forever.
After having our twins, I began to work on the last 15 lbs of baby weight I still had to lose. I got back into a workout routine, cleaned up my diet and lost the weight in a few months. During this time however, I experienced worsening of my digestive symptoms despite the healthy changes I had made. I also had horrible afternoon fatigue that just wouldn’t go away. At the time, I assumed this also was normal given the fact that I had 3 young children.
Fast forward to me studying functional medicine. I began to learn about functional testing and decided to start “practicing” these tests on myself. The first thing I learned was that I was reacting to gluten. This was a BIG contributor to my symptoms. Once I removed it, my fatigue started to decrease and ~90% of my symptoms had gone away. I finally realized what “normal” was and I couldn’t believe I had lived such a large portion of my life suffering with these symptoms. I then ran a comprehensive stool test called the GI Map (same one we run in this program). I rebalanced my microbiome through a customized protocol I had made for myself utilizing these results and also started to implement vagus nerve exercises to help with stress management and restore the gut brain connection.
I now live a life where those gastrointestinal symptoms are a thing of the past. Living without these symptoms or “fear” of getting these symptoms when out in public or around family and friends has been life changing for me. I fell in love with gut health and since then, have been on a mission to help others like myself who have struggled for too long.
