5R Protocol: How to Restore Your Digestive System Health – Video
In this video, Dr. Beth discusses how Functional Medicine uses a therapeutic approach called the 5R Protocol to address digestive tract health issues and their symptoms.
What are the 5Rs of the 5R Protocol:
- Remove
- Replace
- Re-inoculate
- Repair
- Rebalance.
With the guidance of a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, the 5R Protocol can cause significant improvement in symptoms and, sometimes, completely reverse the problem.

What you will learn about
Hello, Dr. Beth here. I want to talk about the 5 R protocol or what we do in order to optimize someone’s gut function.
The 5R Protocol starts with looking at your “gut”. If you have infections going on, pathogenic infections, we need to Remove those. that is going to be done through changing your nutritional lifestyle. Through making sure we’re doing maybe certain types of probiotic strains to crowd out any pathogens. It can be done through antimicrobial broad spectrum supplements. It can be done through antibiotics if we have to. That’s rare.
We need to Replace overall any digestive enzymes support the bile. Make sure stomach acid is there for digestion, absorption of foods.
We need to think about Re-inoculation. So, you know, we’re removing all these bad bugs. We need to make sure we’re creating a robust environment of those beneficial bacteria. So we need prebiotics, probiotics, whether through diet and or supplementation.
Then it’s going to be Repairing. We have to repair the integrity of the mucosal barrier, the overall integrity of the lining of the gut if we have leaky gut going on.
And then in order to prevent any re-infections or imbalance within the microbiome, we have to think about overall Rebalancing that gut continuously. That’s going to happen through nutrition, through lifestyle, and sleep.
These are the 5Rs that it takes in order to optimize the environment and overall gut function.
Functional Medicine, GI tract issues, and the 5R Protocol
Functional medicine focuses on FUNCTION, and an improperly functioning “gut” can lead to a number of symptoms and conditions, including:
- Fatigue
- Muscle pain
- Headaches and migraines
- Allergies
- Mood imbalances and memory issues
- Joint pain
- Persistent skin issues like eczema and acne
- Some cancers
- IBS and inflammatory bowel disease
The 5R Protocol is used by the Registered Dietitians – Nutritionists of Root Cause Medical Clinic to assess the health of your GI tract and related issues, and to make progress towards a resolution of the condition.
Let us extend you an invitation: come visit our medical clinic, either in person or through a telemedicine nutrition consultation, to examine your symptoms and how you generally feel, and trace them back as applicable to the health of your digestive system.
The therapeutic approach followed by our medical team avoids loading you with pharmaceutical drugs to mask the symptoms. This is not a viable approach. Rather, we focus on “finding the why”, that is to say, follow a series of symptoms to their root cause. Then once we have this root cause, we address it with an custom combination of therapies.
Our medical team covers several fields of expertise: medicine, nutrition, chiropractic care, physical therapy. To these, we add a full battery of lab tests. This combination of disciplines enable our team to trace back your symptoms and ailments to a root cause that can be addressed methodically, step-by-step, in the most natural way possible.
