Can I Get High on CBD Oil?

What you need to know about CBD Oil

Let’s get right to the point: Will you get high on CBD oil?

I think that’s the biggest concern for most people who hear about CBD’s benefits. They worry that there’s a psychoactive component that should be avoided.

Initially, I was a skeptic

I have to admit that when I first heard about CBD years ago, the fact that it came from the Cannabis plant was enough to dissuade me from delving further into learning anything more.

My computation was:

Cannabis = Marijuana = Psychoactive effects = Getting high….

But I was wrong.

Let’s look at the facts

Cannabis is a genus of flowering plants and Cannabis sativa is a species within that genus. The plant is used for its hemp fiber, hemp seeds, hemp oil, medicinal purposes, and as a recreational drug.

Depending on the use intended, different varieties of the species are utilized.

The Cannabis sativa species has varieties or strains that include both industrial hemp and marijuana.

Hemp vs. Marijuana, similarities yet big differences

Despite demonstrating dramatic differences in plant compositions, both marijuana and industrial hemp share a common species.

What is the chief difference between them? The amount of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

It explains why the marijuana plant DOES get you high and the hemp plant does not.

There are many cannabinoids (can-nab-in-oyds) but the two most common are THC and CBD.

THC is the psychoactive one so well known in marijuana, and CBD is the “anti-psychoactive” cannabinoid.

CBD does interact with your central nervous system. It has been linked to reduced anxiety and reduced psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia and Parkinson’s.

CBD has also been shown to reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures.

Hemp is extremely low in THC

Industrial hemp has been selectively bred to produce the lowest concentrations possible of THC, the psychoactive compound responsible for getting one “high”.

The chemical profile of industrial hemp makes it incapable of inducing any intoxicating effects, per my research into the plant.

Hemp contains less than o.3% THC.

Marijuana has been bred to be highly concentrated in THC

The marijuana plant has been bred with the exact opposite intention; it contains the highest amount of THC possible.

Marijuana is rich in THC, typically 15 – 40% concentration.

What are CBD’s benefits?

The beneficial effects of CBD are many. It can have major positive effects on:

  • Pain
  • Inflammation
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sleep
  • Bone Health
  • Heart Health
  • Epilepsy
  • Thyroid
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Neurodegenerative Diseases, including Alzheimer’s
  • Assistance in quitting smoking

THC is intoxicating and impairs judgment

THC is considered an intoxicating substance because it stimulates, excites, and can impair judgment.

It affects your sensory system and creates psychological effects, while CBD does not.

CBD can counter the effects of THC

I so often talk about the balancing or yin yang of Mother Nature. It turns out the CBD, acts in such a fashion with THC.

CBD has been shown to have a balancing effect, or buffering effect, on THC.

It can reduce the intoxication and associated anxiety, paranoia, and racing heart created by THC.

A 2019 study revealed that it requires a good dose of CBD to have these buffering or decreased intoxicating effects on THC. [https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00406-019-00978-2 ]

CBD balances the endocannabinoid system of your body

Your body has an endocannabinoid system that performs many important functions:

  • stabilizes your hormones
  • regulates your endorphins
  • balances thyroid
  • balances adrenal function
  • boosts your immunity
  • and more…

The system can decline in its function with age or from other life stresses.

CBD, as a cannabinoid, can act as on “on switch” to the receptors of the endocannabinoid system, improving how it works.

It is for this reason that one can see such a large variety of benefits from taking CBD.

Different individuals will be affected by a sluggish or suboptimal endocannabinoid system in different ways. These personal differences result in the creation of different symptoms.

Consuming CBD will improve those symptoms safely, with no worries of getting “high”.
