Diagnosing Celiac Disease: Tests and Biopsies Video
Celiac Testing and Biopsy
Celiac disease testing has evolved beyond intestinal biopsies, once considered the “gold standard.” Dr. Vikki Petersen explains that while a positive biopsy confirms celiac disease, a negative result doesn’t rule out gluten as a problem. She recommends additional blood tests, such as the transglutaminase test and endomysial test.
For earlier diagnosis, Dr. Petersen suggests more sensitive tests like the Immunoglobulin A and G tests for gliadin. She also recommends an elimination and provocation test, where gluten is removed from the diet for at least a month to assess symptoms improvement. Additionally, EnteroLab offers online testing options, even for those already on a gluten-free diet.
