Hello, Dr. Vikki Petersen here. I wanted to entitle this video, How Much Better Could You Feel? I’ve had some interesting experiences recently and I wanted to share them with you. Last week I was at the bank and my bank teller who I have come to know of course as you do, it’s kind of like going to your dry cleaners and your favorite grocery store, you tend to meet people. She’s getting married soon so I asked her if she was getting excited and she said yes and she was losing weight and she was feeling really good about herself and I said, That’s great, what have you done?”

She said, “Well, I stopped sodas, I stopped sugar, and I stopped fast food.” For me, that was, oh gosh, kind of reminding myself of how many people do those things which are kind of, I consider them complete toxins.  This was the change she made, it was a big change for her. She stopped soda, she stopped sugar, and she stopped fast food. Then she went on to say in addition to losing the weight she just couldn’t believe how great she felt. She said, “I just, I had no idea that I could feel this good.” She said the other interesting thing that had happened in this couple of months she had been doing this is she said, “I now feel repulsed.” She said, “I actually feel nauseous if I eat anything bad.”

I said, “That’s fabulous.” I said, “So are you going to keep that up? I would recommend you keep that up.” She said, “Oh yeah, I want to look good for my honeymoon.” I said, “Yeah, but beyond the honeymoon. We have babies maybe we want to make and we have a whole life to live,” and so I was trying to encourage her. I’m not sure how much she was excited to do that past her honeymoon but the point was that her body actually was repelling against this junk terrible food and she was surprised at that. Then today I was giving a lecture on my five steps for caring for and fueling a healthy body. There’s a lot more than five but it kind of focused on five major things.

Before I start the lecture one thing I am going to be doing that I should tell you about is some cooking videos. One thing I hear from patients and I definitely hear from lecture attendees is this is all great information but how do I do it? How do I do it at home? How do I cook, how do I shop, how do I make it fast and healthy? I’m a fast cook and I do like to cook so I’m going to be sharing my recipes with you from my kitchen so it’ll be a different location than these videos that come to you from my office. Anyway, so before the lecture started we were discussing good food and one woman originated that a friend of hers has kind of gotten hooked on her green smoothies.

She said yeah, now she kind of changes it up and depending on what she’s in the mood for she said she just shops, she said, once a week. Anyway, she shops and she has everything to hand. I said, “That’s a very key point is having things to hand and then when you have them you’ll use them.” She said that her friend now is so kind of “addicted” to her green smoothie that she had to travel and she just didn’t feel as well. I said, “That’s really the thing,” and I hear that from patients so much is I had no idea I could feel this good. If I had only known I could feel this good I would have done all this sooner.

It’s hard going on faith, it’s hard trying to imagine something that isn’t there. How do you imagine feeling great if you’re not feeling great? How do you even conjure that up unless you’ve only been feeling bad for a relatively short period of time and you can remember what great felt like? Maybe it’s going back and remembering how energetic you were in childhood. I meet a lot of patients who didn’t really have a healthy childhood either but have you had a healthy time in life when you were really energetic and felt great and the brain worked the way you want it to and everything was functioning well? Harken back to that and realize you can feel that good, and then what do we do about it?

Some key basic things in addition to what my bank teller would tell you to do are no soda, no sugar, and no fast food. Even the sugar, I’m not so opposed to a little sugar now and again, I prefer it in the form of a little honey or date sugar, really, really dark chocolate and dairy-free of course and it’s just dark chocolate and it’s got a little sugar in it, depending on what obviously we’re treating you for I don’t think that’s the end of the world. The artificial sweeteners, the high fructose corn syrup, the GMO foods, the foods loaded with dyes and artificial colors and preservatives, all these things are really a no go kind of situation.

The GMO is one that’s coming out more and more. If you’re watching this from another country you don’t have it to worry about so much. Here in the United States, we’re being really inundated with GMO foods and we’re not allowed to say no or saying no has not resulted in our government helping us out. In Europe, they don’t allow GMOs for the most part, which I think is brilliant for them. Here in the US all we can do is really search out organic produce and go that way to avoid GMO but it’s very deleterious to our health. Beyond that, we have to have good fat, not oils that are rancid, no hydrogenated oils or trans fats and staying away from vegetable oils.

I do have a book coming out pretty soon on healthy fats and oils and that will help as well. You need to get your good fats because it’s very important for hormone balance and brain health and so many different things for the body. Good fat is so important but bad fat is terrible. The good oils, olive oil, and coconut oil, almond oil, the tea seed oil is very good, I mentioned coconut. Avocado oil, my favorite fruit, so these are the good oils to focus on and getting your nine servings of fruits and vegetables every day. I know for some people that is a little mind-boggling to think of nine but if you do start the morning with that green smoothie and there is a recipe on my website for that. As I said, there’s going to be the You Tubes coming out very soon.

You can easily start your day with four servings of fruits and vegetables and then hitting nine is not that difficult throughout the day but you kind of really need to start at the beginning of the day if you’re going to achieve that. The basics of water, the best thing to drink is water and plenty of it, getting a good 8-10 glasses a day of purified water. Exercise of course very, very, important as well. If you want to start with some basics, the worst things I can think of, high fructose corn syrup and the sodas and the fast-food definitely start there but start somewhere. Really try to get you and your family in that direction of healthier food. Just make baby steps because if you think you have to change everything overnight it’s going to be overwhelming and then you kind of paralyze yourself and you don’t do anything.

Instead just say, “Well, this week I’m going to drink more water, that’s all I’m going to do, I’m just going to drink more water.” Do that and stick with it though, remind yourself and set an alarm on your phone, whatever you have to do but drink more water. Then just say, “You know what? I’m just really not going to do those sodas. I’m going to find an herbal tea that I like. I’m going to find a pressed juice or something at whole foods or Trader Joe’s or something that’s got some vegetables in it,” or something that you like.

I don’t care if you put some squeeze of lemon or orange in your water or anything that’s a beverage that’s not a soda and not diet sodas either, anything to kind of move you in that direction. You’ll find that that soda you will not miss it, I guarantee. You might mentally miss it a little bit but not for long, and you go back to it and you’ll be horrified at how terrible it tastes. They’re engineered. Our food in the US is engineered to make us buy it again and again. Our fast food is like that, the sodas are like that. They actually stimulate a part of the brain that makes you crave them and want them. You are being treated like a lab rat and your brain is being tampered with in such a way that you become a willing victim and a very good purchaser of these types of foods.

I really encourage you to make some simple choices in the right direction, stick with it, keep going, don’t get overwhelmed but make a bargain with yourself. “This week I’m going to do this,” maybe you do it for a couple of weeks then you go onto the next thing. Don’t forget the first thing just add something to it. Take little baby steps. As I said, I’m going to come out with some videos and hopefully make it easier for you because it will be fast and it won’t be overwhelming because some people just don’t know how to cook and it’s not that hard.

I hope this was helpful. The real point I wanted to make was that you can feel great. Maybe you’ve never felt great or maybe you remember what feeling great was like but what we’re all about here at the clinic and was root cause medicine is about is really getting to that root cause. What is the thing that’s preventing you from feeling fabulous? I want to help you get back there again. I’d like to offer you a free consultation, you can call the clinic and we can set that up for you. We are a destination clinic meaning we actually see patients from across the country and around the world. They do need to visit once and after that, we can work with them long distance.

The number you call is 408-733-0400. Just let them know you want a free consultation, it’s really as easy as that. If you live locally to us in Sunnyvale, California, Silicon Valley, then you can do the free consultation with us here at the clinic. Make that step. Don’t feel like you have to continue feeling the way you’re feeling. Lifestyle, I’m not saying that’s the only thing you’ll need to do but if you don’t make a lifestyle change, you’re really living on that terrible food and you think something else is all you need to do, believe me, it’s not the case, the lifestyle changes have to come along with it and then we’ll get you feeling fabulous again. That’s my wish for you and until next time I wish you very good health.
