Do you suffer from migraines? I used to, so I know personally how miserable they can be. I used to suffer from them two to three times a month, but whether it’s once a month or up to eight times or more a month, what I want to share is the fact that there is a natural solution.

I know that goes against the idea that there’s no real solution and that you can’t get rid of migraines. Personally, I got rid of mine decades ago. I then got rid of my mother’s; she was 40 years older than me, so I didn’t get a hold of her until her late 60s, but she had been a migraine sufferer her entire life. It started in childhood for her; for me, it didn’t start until puberty. She had been suffering for decades, and when we got rid of them, that was it—she never had another migraine. We see that in the clinic all the time.

If it sounds too good to be true, I understand, but I’m just—I have to tell you, I’m only talking about this because I know how miserable it is to suffer, and I know that we have a solution. Is it for every single person 100% of the time? No. It’s probably closer to 80-85% of the time that we get the solution, but that’s really high when you think about the fact that you’re told it’s genetic. That’s what I was told because my mother had them. Or, “Gee, some people get them, we really don’t know why.” We just don’t find that to be the case.

Whether you’re a man or a woman, regardless of the frequency, we’ve seen some very serious migraine sufferers. Honestly, if you’re willing to be compliant—and that is key because we typically find there are some diet and lifestyle changes that need to be made. I know that as soon as I say “diet,” if you’re a migraine sufferer who’s been really trying to figure this out, you’re going to go, “Oh, believe me, if it was my diet, I would have figured it out.” I get why you’re saying that because one expects that if you eat something today and tomorrow morning you wake up with a migraine, you look at what you ate yesterday. Then you go, “Oh, maybe it was that, maybe it was that.” So you stay away from that for a while, and then maybe you still get a migraine, or you stay away from it for a while, and then you reintroduce it and you don’t get a migraine. It can make you want to pull your hair out trying to figure out what these triggers are.

It really has to do with the fact that you can eat something, and it’s actually in your system, able to affect your nervous system for eight days. We tend to think, “What did I do the last day or two?” We don’t tend to think about over an eight-day period of time. So that could be, as I said, wanting to pull your hair out trying to figure that out, but it’s not that hard, honestly, to figure out. There does tend to be a food component, even though it’s not that obvious.

For women, sometimes there’s a hormonal component. These are women who tend to get migraines just before their cycle or at the beginning of their menstrual cycle. There can be the hormonal component, and then there’s also a very high prevalence of a structural component, whether there are irritated nerves in the neck or the jaw or the skull itself. There can be irritated nerves that are creating the problem as well.

Here at Root Cause, we come at it from that whole-body perspective. We have a physical medicine department with physical therapy and chiropractic. We have the internal medicine/functional medicine department looking at why the nervous system is inflamed, food sensitivities, gut balance—because there are certain gut bacteria that can create nervous system inflammation—and then, of course, as I mentioned, the hormones. Hormonal imbalance can very much create migraines. Yet there’s plenty of you out there, I know, who just say, “No, it’s not hormonal for me.” For me, I was suffering two to three times a month, and I was having a combination. I did have a hormonal migraine, but then, of course, I had them at other times of the month as well. I had a lot of components coming together—really, it was all three: structural, dietary, and hormonal for me. It’s different for everyone, but our success rate is so high.

Recently, several new patients have come in with migraines and are doing great. I know that feeling of helplessness where you’re told, “That’s just you,” and here’s the drug. You can take that prophylactic drug right when you feel the headache coming on, but now we’re learning a lot of these drugs have a rebound effect. You really don’t want to take them too often because they’re actually creating rebound migraines, which is the last thing you need. It’s so much better to really get to the root cause and not have to suffer at all.

Again, I know that might sound incredulous to you, unbelievable, but it’s not. It’s truly, truly not. I say that personally as well as professionally, having done this for over 25 years and helped so many people with some very severe migraines to do so very well.
