Low-Key Fitness: Is Light Exercise the Key to Better Health?

Dr. Vikki Petersen reviews two studies that shed light on the benefits of light exercise versus high-intensity exercise. The first study, published in PLOS One, found that substituting 4-5 hours of walking or standing with 1 hour of high-intensity exercise improved insulin sensitivity, decreased triglycerides, and increased good cholesterol.

Another study published in the Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that occasional high-intensity interval training (HIIT) benefited both active and inactive individuals’ metabolic health. Dr. Petersen concludes that the key is to combine regular movement throughout the day with occasional higher-intensity training for optimal metabolic health and fat loss benefits.
