Protein: Are You Getting the Right Amount?
According to Dr. Vikki Petersen, protein is essential for life and health, with a recommended daily intake of 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. However, research shows that the average American consumes 1.4 to 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram, exceeding the recommended amount. Both plant and animal proteins provide essential amino acids, and plants can provide all 20 amino acids, although the types and amounts vary.
Dr. Vikki Petersen emphasizes that most Americans get enough protein and can stop worrying about it. Instead, focus on consuming enough fiber, fruits, and vegetables, and reducing sugar and refined foods. Exceptions include older adults (above 65), who may require more protein (up to 1.2 grams per kilogram), and those who are sedentary or have limited appetites.
