Functional Medicine Doctor discovers root cause to many common yet undiagnosed symptoms - Part IV of an interview series with Dr. Vikki Petersen.
Transcript of the video interview
Q. It sounds like a lot of these undiagnosed symptoms are really common. Yet a lot of people can't get a diagnosis. What are the symptoms of the patients you see coming into your clinics?
Dr. Vikki: You can see, I specifically put the undiagnosed symptoms on the cover [of the Hiatal Hernia Syndrome book] so that people could get an idea of all these common symptoms that are related to this syndrome that we have named.
We have things like acid reflux and bloating, indigestion, constipation from a digestive standpoint. But then we also have shortness of breath and heart palpitations, there's panic attacks and insomnia. And you listen to that list of symptoms, and you think, "How could those possibly be related?"
That's why it is misdiagnosed. And that's why people are suffering, because there's up to 20 different symptoms, associated with Hiatal Hernia Syndrome. And what's happening is because our medical system is so compartmentalized you know, you have heart palpitations so you see a cardiologist, and you have shortness of breath and you see a lung doctor, and you have digestive problems and you're seeing all these individual specialists... but not realizing that there is a common root cause.
That's why we wrote the book. Because when this gets to a certain level of complexity and as it gets more serious and severe, patients are running to the ER, and they are absolutely miserable. And the panic attacks and heart palpitations can basically ruin their lives.
