Realistic Health Expectations
Are your health goals faltering?
I’m writing this in January when New Years' resolutions regarding health are often made. Regardless of the time of year, setting health goals is a common activity. Unfortunately, the success rate of those goals isn’t high.
If you’ve recently set some goals and are feeling discouraged, continue reading; there are hope and some good solutions.
Let’s not dwell on the negative, but instead look ahead
If you’ve failed to achieve your goals this year or in years past, the first step is to not beat yourself up about it. There’s no point in focusing on the negative.
Sometimes a source of failure is an unrealistic goal setting. If you’ve never even jogged, perhaps running a marathon is a bit too much to ask.
Therefore, we want to set “bite-sized” goals that are achievable and build to the larger, ideal goal, but on a nice gradient.
Common goals revolve around healthy eating, exercise, and weight loss
Some of the most common health goals involve losing weight, eating better, and exercising more.
These are good goals but often aren’t achieved. Why? You don’t have the tools that give YOU success.
The facts are that we’re all different. A healthy diet that attains an ideal weight isn’t the same for you as it is for your best friend. You have YOUR health history, YOUR genetics, and YOUR lifestyle.
Basic truths of good health
Yes, there are certain truths to health that we all share and need to implement:
- Exercise – 45 minutes per day, 5-6 days per week
- Water – 8 glasses purified water.
- Fruits and vegetables – 9 servings.
- You do need adequate fiber. It’s mentioned separately because so many Americans are deficient in this point, but just above we mention fruits and vegetables – add legumes to that and you’ll likely achieve your fiber quota. From our Registered Dietitian: Fiber regulates blood sugar, cholesterol levels, and satiety in the body. Diets rich in fiber have also been associated with reduced risks of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes! Start slowly: serve a side salad with dinner, mix flaxseeds into your smoothies, or snack on a piece of fruit. Here is one of my favorite fiber-rich dinners (Link to https://rootcausemedicalclinics.com/blog/vegetable-bean-soup/)
What exactly do YOU need?
What is the “right” formula for you? Therein lies a personalized health program.
We mentioned some basics above but these fall short of perfection in that they don’t account for your individualized needs. Namely:
Your health history, genetics, exposure to toxins, drugs, your diet, your family health history, and more.
Specific testing after a very specialized history gives us the proper direction to take for you so that your goals are easily achieved.
The good news: it’s not hard and it’s completely natural, no drugs.
