Vitamin D, What Does Dr Oz Say?
What you will learn about
What does Dr. Oz have to say about vitamin D3?
This year, 2018, Dr. Oz has had a lot to say about vitamin D, and rightly so.
Do you:
- Want to protect your bones? Vitamin D3 is the answer.
- Want to avoid cancer? Vitamin D3 helps with that.
- Want to protect your brain? Vitamin D3 is again recommended.
What else does Vitamin D3 do for you?
You get the idea from the list above, but let’s not short change Vitamin D’s benefits. In addition to the above, you should take note of your vitamin D3 levels if you suffer from any of the following:
- Depression
- Heart disease
- Weak immune system
- Overweight
- Unstable blood sugar
All of the above health concerns have been seen to improve with healthy vitamin D3 levels.
Why are you likely to be deficient?
D is called the sunshine vitamin so it would seem easy to get enough. Get outside for a few minutes every day, soak up some rays, and enjoy the vitamin D your body just produced for you.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t quite work that way. Sun exposure just doesn’t seem to be enough for the vast majority of Americans, not to mention Europeans.
Why isn’t the sun causing you to make enough vitamin D3?
Many of us don’t live close enough to the equator to get strong enough rays to produce enough vitamin D.
Most of us aren’t outside mid-day, and if we are, we are not baring enough skin to get the exposure we need. Our ancestors were outside much of the day, which is why this wasn’t necessarily as difficult, depending on where they lived.
Many with darker skin just won’t make vitamin D by being out in the sun. Their darker skin protects them from sunburn but it also doesn’t allow adequate vitamin D production.
A 2009 study found only 3 percent of black people out of a sample of thousands of Americans had recommended vitamin D3 levels. Twenty years prior, a similar study showed a deficiency rate of 12 percent, so this was a dramatic decrease.
Some studies say that just 10-15 minutes in the sun is all a light-skinned person needs to produce adequate vitamin D, but tests don’t necessarily support that.
Some research shows vitamin D production at 300 IU from sun exposure yet others cite 1,000 IU of production near the equator. With a minimum daily requirement of 2000 IU or more, even sun exposure is likely to fall short for most of us, not to mention those from northerly or southerly climes.
The facts don’t lie
Regardless of what should be happening, the facts are these: Most Americans are deficient when you analyze their blood, and normalizing blood levels is associated with bettered health.
Health Hack: Check your doctor’s Vitamin D IQ.
If you have low vitamin D3 levels and your doctor prescribes a high dose of vitamin D2, ask him or her why they are not prescribing D3? Considering how important it is for overall health to have healthy D3 levels, your doctor should know that the efficacy of D2 is about half that of D3.
The 2017 study from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom set out to make the distinction between supplementing with vitamin D3 vs D2. Their goal was to observe which of the two nutrients effectively raises levels of vitamin D within the body.
Participants receiving D-3 in a biscuit raised their levels 74 percent, while those receiving D3 via juice enjoyed a 75 percent increase. The D-2 group attained less than half that increase, at 33 and 34 percent, respectively. Not surprisingly, the placebo group saw a 25 percent drop during the study period.
The study’s conclusion was that vitamin D3 is twice as effective at raising vitamin D levels in the body as vitamin D2.
The drop in the placebo group again speaks to the need of making an effort to have adequate vitamin D3 levels. It appears that unless we are actively working on it, we tend to become deficient.
The lead author of the study had this to say: “The importance of vitamin D in our bodies is not to be underestimated, but living in the U.K., it is very difficult to get sufficient levels of it from its natural source, the sun, so we know it has to be supplemented through our diet.” The same can be said for many parts of the U.S.
Some researchers have called the state of D deficiency a pandemic.
How’s your health?
Do you suffer from inflammation? Inflammation causes degenerative diseases and conditions such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, fatigue, weight gain, and more.
It could be partially from deficient levels of vitamin D3, which is a natural steroid and anti-inflammatory agent.
Are you or anyone you know suffering from less than optimal health?
I would truly love to help and the good news is we have excellent success treating chronic degenerative diseases. Diet is certainly a mainstay of our program, but so too is the evaluation of nutrient levels such as vitamin D3, food sensitivities, infections, toxins, and hormonal imbalance.
Each program is tailored to the individual and their particular imbalances that are creating their particular symptoms.
