Health & Beauty Found in a Bottle?
Would You Buy a Product Offering Youth, Passion & Mental Acuity in a Bottle?
There is a new product on the market whose name I won’t mention. I’m too angry with them to give them any promotion. Marketing wise this product is pure genius – the ads are beautiful, colorful, and very enticing. What are they promising? A solution to happiness, mental performance, sleep, weight, passion, and youth – that’s all!
As a clinical nutritionist I can say that on the plus side they aren’t offering dangerous drugs, but… What are they selling? Water. Water with various nutrients in it.
Houston, We Definitely Have a Problem!
Why do I have a problem with this? Two reasons really:
1. As a society we are all too willing to opt for the quick fix. One would think that by a certain age we would have figured out that ‘quick fixes’ aren’t really fixed, but rather temporary measures that often end us up in worse shape than when we began.
2. What this company is putting in their water is a small amount of nutrition that is extremely unlikely to have any benefit in normalizing anyone’s health.
Some Truth
Let’s take a specific example: In their “Sun” product they promise vitamin D in every bottle. While there’s no lie there, I’m sure there is vitamin D added, the problem is the implied message. What is ‘implied’ is that there is adequate vitamin D to handle one’s daily needs.
As a clinical nutritionist we see patients regularly who are deficient in vitamin D. Such a deficiency can increase their chances of bone loss, cancer, and diabetes, to name but a few conditions. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, meaning that it’s best absorbed when the carrier is a fat. That is why the liquid vitamin D3 that we provide for our patients is in a base of olive oil.
Is water a fat? Obviously, it is not. So not only is the water unlikely to have an adequate quantity of vitamin D, one’s ability to absorb whatever it does contain is compromised by the lack of fat present to enhance absorption. The same is true for the rest of the products and the quantity of what they are offering. It isn’t a therapeutic dose and one needs more than a small amount of an herb or vitamin to optimize one’s health.
Is a ‘Quick Fix’ Really a Fix?
We live in a time where we think that a pill will solve our problems. In our heart of hearts we know it’s not really true but we continue to hope that an easy quick solution is available. That’s why a company such as this can take advantage of us with their slick advertising and colorful bottles. Don’t fall for it.
Restoring good health doesn’t have to be difficult and it doesn’t have to be complicated. But it does have to focus on restoring function to body parts that are overstressed and undernourished, for whatever reason. It is getting to the actual root cause of why a symptom occurs and restoring function to that body part(s) that ensures correction of the problem for good, not temporarily.
Do This Instead
So if you’re not sleeping well, have poor concentration, need to lose weight or you’re deficient in vitamin D, find a practitioner with a focus on clinical nutrition who will look for the underlying root cause of why those symptoms exist and treat them with the purpose of restoring you to normal function – not one who prescribes drugs as a ‘solution’.
I am here to help and am delighted to do so. If you’re having trouble finding a clinician with the above mindset, feel free to contact us for a consultation at no charge.
