Healthy Alternatives to Valentine’s Day Treats
Enjoying Valentine’s Day Healthfully
Valentine’s Day is a day of being carefree with your better half and enjoying some indulgences.
Every 14th of February, we indulge in love, celebration, and, most of all, sweets.
You don’t have to abstain altogether, but let’s give you some better and worse options when it comes to treats.
Keep in mind that sugar is not only rich in calories but it’s very damaging to your immune system. Sugar is cancer’s preferred fuel source – sorry, but it’s true.
Check out our 4 worst picks and below and their healthier alternative.
Worst picks and healthy alternatives
BAD: Starburst Candies
Each piece contains 20 calories. Making 1 pack deliver more or less 240 calories to your system plus 5 grams of saturated fat. This “treat” has zero grams of dietary fiber and no protein.
Healthy Alternative: Stevita – Stevia sweetened sugar-free hard candies
These candies are delicious, come in many flavors, and are sugar-free, gluten-free, and organic
BAD: M & M’s Milk Chocolate
During the ’70s, Mars, the manufacturer of M & M’s, discontinued the red dye that colored the shells due to its link cancer. Fast forward to 2020 and there’s still much controversy surrounding the trademark colors that make these crunchy chocolate pieces so visually appealing to kids.
Healthy Alternative: Lily’s dark chocolate bars
These bars are organic, 70% cacao, free of sugar, and gluten-free. They are made with non-GMO ingredients, fair trade certified, and sweetened with stevia.

BAD: Welch’s Fruit Snacks
You would think with the use of the word “fruit”, they're actually would be some. Sadly, there’s almost none. The most prominent ingredients (check the label) are fruit puree bombarded with sugar and corn syrup. The fact that these “fruit” snacks contain zero grams of fiber is a dead giveaway that they are far removed from actual fruit.
Healthy Alternative: Sweet Fish Smart Sweets
If you or your sweetheart (kids included) love gummy-like treats, you’ll enjoy these. Smart Sweets claims to have “innovated the first delicious candy without the sugar”. And they “pinky promise” their candy is “free from sugar alcohols, artificial sweeteners and added sugars”.
We’ve tested them and they’re pretty darn good considering there’s no sugar, no sugar alcohols, they have no artificial flavors or colors, are gluten-free, and contain no GMOs.

Smell the roses; enjoy your time together and give the bad candy away!
Valentine’s Day is about love and a special time with your special someone.
If you’ve been working on your health, don’t let the day get sabotaged by a well-meaning gift of terrible candy. A polite thank you, a big hug, and placing the bad sugar somewhere out of reach is not hard to do.
On the 15th of February, feel free to throw it out, give it away, and replace it with one of our suggestions above. You’re loved one needs not to be the wiser.
